![]() The paper asks more questions than it gives ready answers, but its purpose is to encourage space agencies, ethicists, and social scientists to engage in a broad discussion on the ethical challenges of a human mission to Mars. Paradoxically, this paper shows that, the biggest ethical challenges associated with space missions may appear not on Mars, but on Earth, when decisions about the enhancement of the pre-launch crew are being considered. While human enhancement technologies are ethically controversial, their application for the purpose of the future human deep-space missions may be necessary procedures. This paper discusses the opportunities for human enhancement in future human space missions. Because the space environment is hazardous for humans, it can be expected that new ethical issues concerning the value of human life may appear. While our case study is mostly a mission to Mars, ethical issues around human enhancement for space are also relevant for other longer-term human expeditions, including Lunar and Martian missions, and beyond. We focus our attention mostly on one issue – the idea of human enhancements for space missions. The aim of this paper is to discuss possible ethical challenges and issues, which may appear during a human mission to Mars. Less attention is being paid by philosophers and ethicists, and social scientists as well. It is broadly discussed and studied by scientists in such fields as medicine and aerospace engineering. The study also demonstrates how even an emergency public health response can benefit from rapid experimental pre-testing of interventions.Ī human mission to Mars is planned by public and private agencies. Infographics improved recall and comprehension of how to manage self-isolation.ĭecision aids can be used to support self-isolation during COVID-19. The online planning tool increased confidence about coping with self-isolation only among the adults aged under 40. (i) Accuracy of matching symptom patterns to a response scale for the need to self-isolate (ii) self-reported confidence in coping with self-isolation (iii) objective tests of recall and comprehension.ĭecision trees improved decisions about when self-isolation was necessary, although participants systematically underestimated the need to self-isolate with less common COVID-19 symptoms (e.g. Three stages tested: (i) whether decision trees help people to decide whether they need to self-isolate (ii) whether an online planning tool increases people’s confidence in their ability to self-isolate and (iii) whether infographics help people to absorb advice on managing a household in which someone must self-isolate. We conducted a pre-registered online experiment with a nationally representative sample (n = 500). We set out to test whether decision aids can support self-isolation. Self-isolation is a vital element of efforts to contain COVID-19. Our work contributes to an emerging literature on the well-being of entrepreneurs, illuminating the critical role team dynamics and individual coping strategies play in the well-being of entrepreneurs. We further argue that an individual’s regulatory strategies shape the relationship between entrepreneurial team dynamics and individual well-being. Building on self-determination theory and recent research on extreme teams, we argue that the satisfaction and thwarting of an entrepreneur’s basic needs is, fundamentally, socially situated-and, consequently, team dynamics are a critical, but relatively undertheorized, input to individual well-being in entrepreneurial settings. We begin with two persistent findings from the entrepreneurship literature: first, that individual well-being is critical to venturing outcomes and second, that entrepreneurship is most often a team sport. Why do some individuals thrive during the process of new venture creation, while others experience the dark side of the venturing process? This paper contributes to a growing literature on entrepreneurial well-being by connecting it to the literature on entrepreneurial teams.
